Where I differ with the NRA

The NRA says that an  article that appeared on TheHill.com asserted that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) is working on a bill with the NRA that would implement universal background checks.

The NRA’s response was:

NRA does NOT support universal background checks and is not working with Manchin to implement this type of legislation.  NRA opposes, and will continue to oppose, universal background checks and registration schemes.

The NRA also stated: We  do believe that records of those who are prohibited by law from purchasing firearms (including those whose mental health history puts them in this category) ought to be included in the federal instant check system.

This is where the NRA and I disagree:

I agree hardened criminals should not be allowed to legally purchase a firearm. However, I disagree with the mental health issue. Why? Many reasons. For One,  if you are grieving over the loss of a loved one and are placed on anti-depressants by your doctor; you are considered by the Obama administration to have mental health issues.

For another, can you trust your doctor? Suppose you say something that your doctor disagrees with and he writes in your chart he thinks you have some mental health issues. Guess what? You’re on the Obama cannot-buy-gun list.

Lets face it, all doctors are being recruited to ask you if you have a firearm in your home. That’s none of their business. In fact it’s none of their business what type of health problems your mom, dad, grandparents etc., had or has; how many children you have, or where or if you work.

All a doctor needs to know is that you are there for treatment for a certain illness. It’s about your health. Not your background, what you own or your family history. After all, a doctor won’t even tell you information on your spouse or child without their permission because of the privacy act.

I think it’s time the tables were turned on them. When they ask any questions about your family you should tell them you cannot disclose that information without the person’s permission due to the privacy act.

And when it comes to mental health issues; I don’t believe there is one single person on the face of the earth whose marbles are 100% in alignment. And you certainly can’t or don’t classify a Psychopath, Bereavement or Depression in the same catagory; that is unless you’re the Obama administration.

By using the Obama administration’s own presumptions, Obama should not be around any firearms ever. Not even his guards should carry them. After all isn’t Narcissism listed as a mental illness. And we all know Obama is the poster child for that.

We should all contact the NRA and have them define what they consider a “history of mental illness” compared to what the government considers “mental illness” before they support anything!
