Living In The Shadow of Death

Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society.” Aristotle02

It is a fact that Yazidi and other Christian communities trace their Syrian and Iraqi roots back nearly 2,000 years. Islam, which literally means surrender or submission, developed during the 7th century. The former is now systematically being exterminated, along with the Jews, Baha’sis and even Muslims who do not toe a fundamentalist line.

100,000 Christians have been murdered each year during the last ten years. That means every five minutes a Christian is killed because of his faith. Father Gabriel Nadaf, who has campaigned for Christian Arab rights and for local Christians to support Israel, told the United Nations Human Rights Council in September of 2014 that “Those who can escape persecution at the hands of Muslim extremists have fled. … Those who remain, exist as second if not third-class citizens to their Muslim rulers.”

While not yet attaining the scale of Nazi and Communist slaughters, radical Islam may have surpassed their predecessors in depravity. They ask terrified children, “Who wants to be beheaded first?” and then butcher them in front of the other children. They bury people alive. They teach their own children how to slice the heads off their perceived enemies. They torture and rape girls and women, then sell them into slavery, prostitution or forced marriage. They sell their victims blood and organs to finance more atrocities.

One of the few safe havens for those who escape is Israel, a nation that has provided refugees with security, education, healthcare, jobs and religious freedom. Another million plus have fled to Turkey, a country so overwhelmed with demands for food and shelter that they have had to use their military forces to prevent Syrians from entering. American, European and Middle Eastern promises of weapons and aid have been TOO LITTE, TOO LATE or simply a NO SHOW.  Even the UN’s World Food Program has barely enough money to feed refugees for any extended time.

Terrorized multitudes unable to reach safety in Israel or Turkey are left caught between Islamic radicals and a slow painful death from starvation, disease and freezing winter temperatures. Many escaped with only the clothes on their backs.   These people, hunted down like animals, have seen their relatives hung, shot, drown, beheaded,  beaten or burned to death.

According to Open Doors, radical Islam has two centers of assault – one in the Middle East and a second in sub-Saharan Africa. Even Christian majority states are experiencing unprecedented levels of exclusion, discrimination and even violence.

Kenya jumped from number 43 to 19 in 2015.   One of the growing problems in the East African country is the presence of neighboring Somalia’s al-Shabab militants. In December the group was responsible for killing 64 Christians near Mandera, a Kenyan town on the border of Somalia. On Nov. 22, the militants hijacked a bus and killed 28 non-Muslims, 22 of which were traveling home for Christmas.

Boko Haram militants opened fire on northern Nigerian villages just a few days ago, leaving bodies scattered everywhere with as many as 2,000 people feared dead.  Famous for kidnapping girls from schools, to be used as sex slaves or sold as wives, Boko Haram has also destroyed hundreds of churches, over 50 in Kano alone.  One church and ministry has been built seven times and destroyed seven times. Another has been built three times and destroyed three times. Pastors have been murdered in their houses. Another was murdered in the church during a prayer service. The situation is much worse further north in Yobe and Borno states, the headquarters of Boko Haram. People have fled residences where their forefathers lived for generations. Christians have been the victims.

According to Roman Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Methodist and evangelical African Inland Church faith leaders in Kenya, there were more than 20 attacks in 2014 resulting in more than 200 deaths. Initially churches were targeted but now Christians are attacked on public transportation.

The world once stood in solidarity, promising to never allow another episode of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Yet now the world’s governments stands silent as Christian populations are exterminated.

Years ago George Carlin quipped, “Scientists announced today that they discovered a cure for apathy.   However, no one showed the slightest interest in it.”   We live in a world where apathy is king.   The lap dog media and secular left, successful in eradicating almost all historical reference to our Christian heritage as Americans, celebrate this apathy as radical Islam systematically attempts to eradicate Christianity in the rest of the world. Beginning at the White House, any mention of Christian persecution or the radical motivation of Islamic terrorism is discounted, ignored or whitewashed, allowing oppression to be cultivated and spread with little or no resistance.
