Criminals Prefer Unarmed Victims

guncon“If there is hard evidence that stronger gun-control laws actually reduce gun crimes in general or reduce murders in particular, the Second Amendment can be repealed, as other amendments have been repealed. Constitutional amendments exist to serve the people. People do not exist to be sacrificed to Constitutional amendments. But if hard evidence shows that restrictions on gun ownership lead to more gun crimes, rather than less, then the National Rifle Association’s opposition to those restrictions makes sense, independently of the Second Amendment.” Thomas Sowell, Why Gun Control Zealots Ignore The Facts

In 2007 the Harvard Journal of Law, that bastion of extreme Liberalism, published a study by Don B. Kates, a Yale-educated criminologist and constitutional lawyer, and Dr. Gary Mauser, a Canadian criminologist at Simon Fraser University with a Ph.D. from the University of California Irvine, debunking gun control lies, which explains why it was largely kept under wraps.  You can read the 46 page report at this link.

The left’s claim that the U.S. has by far the highest murder rate because guns are uniquely available when compared to other modern developed nations, is “in fact, false.”  Russia with strict gun control laws have a murder rate almost triple the United States.  Luxembourg where handguns are totally banned and ownership of any kind of gun is minimal has a murder rate 9 times higher than Germany according to the U.N. Study on Firearms Regulations.   On the other hand, Norway, Finland, Germany, France and Denmark, which have high rates of gun ownership, have low murder rates.

England, which banned and then confiscated all handguns and most rifles from law-abiding citizens, found that armed crime increased substantially due to the fact that criminals had no trouble finding guns and less trouble using them to commit violent crimes against disarmed citizens. By 2000, England had an overall crime rate about 4 times higher than the U.S.

And don’t let the left use Australia as an example to follow. After a gun ban was instituted, gun murders increased by 19% and armed robberies increased by about 69%.

In 2004, The National Academy of Sciences released an evaluation of its review of 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications and their own original empirical research. They failed to find any gun control that had actually reduced violent crime, suicide, or gun accidents. The same conclusion was reached in 2003 by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Yet you’ll never heard this repeated by the biased, left-wing lapdog media. The truth is simple: As gun ownership has increased, the United States has seen a dramatic reduction in criminal violence.   Just as dictators prefer unarmed citizens, criminals prefer unarmed victims.  The published study proves that the more guns a nation has, the less criminal activity they have.

Over the past 20 years, as firearm ownership has increased,  firearm related homicides are down 39% and other firearm related crimes are down 69%.   Almost every mass shooting that has occurred in the United States since 1950 has taken place in a state with strict gun control laws and with just one exception, every mass shooting since at least 1950 has taken place where citizens are banned from carrying guns.

Most often, the mere presence of a firearm is enough to stop criminal activity in its tracks,” writes Scott Bach, president of the Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs. “Criminologists of all political persuasions, in over a dozen studies, estimate that firearms are used for protection against criminals several hundred thousand to 2.5 million times per year, often without a shot fired. Overall guns in the U.S. are used 80 times more often to prevent crime than they are used to take lives. This is a staggering statistic, but it’s not one you are likely to hear on the evening news.

“Gun-control zealots are almost always people who are lenient toward criminals, while they are determined to crack down on law-abiding citizens who want to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones.” Thomas Sowell
