In the summer of 2016 a college student gave birth to a baby in Ohio. She had tried to murder her baby inutero with drugs, alcohol and numerous other substances to no avail so when the child was born, she cut the umbilical cord, threw her baby into a plastic trash bag and tossed it into the garbage bin. A jury found her guilty of aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and two counts of tampering with evidence. The judge sentenced her to life in prison without parole.
Was her crime really any different than that of doctors and the women who come to them to have their child murdered? These doctors, and I use that term loosely, literally tear babies apart, limb from limb while they are still in the womb or inject saline solutions that burn tiny bodies to death. Are thy not also guilty of abusing the corpse when they toss these innocent murdered babies into “biological waste” containers? Many of these so-called doctors have been involved in not just the murder of a single child but in the murder of hundreds, maybe thousands. Yet these murders go untried and unpunished.
Abortion is murder. Each abortion snuffs out an innocent human life. Referring to unborn babies as “fetus,” “embryo,” or “zygote,” may be scientifically correct, but does not change the fact that these children are human beings.
What if, just like the abortion argument, a woman finds herself trapped in an unwanted marriage which severely curtails her freedom. As Betsy C. Howard discussed in Why We Should Legalize Murder for Hire, if a woman only feels she has one way out should she make the difficult decision to murder her husband? Of course divorce is an alternative but some women just do not have the emotional and financial resources to deal with divorce and, after attorneys drain the couple’s finances, the woman will be left with little money to get on with her life.
A discrete and well-timed hit would not only solve her problem but protect her husband from the pain of discovering that he is no longer wanted. A truly skilled assassin can take his target painlessly, in an instant, without suffering. The end of a marriage can potentially ruin a woman’s life, but if her husband can be taken out quickly and cleanly, it can be a new beginning for her.
Murder for hire is an uncomfortable subject, and the better course would be to avoid an unwanted marriage in the first place. Yet this is not a decision that anyone else can make for a woman. It is her marriage; only she can decide when it must end.
I realize readers may be hesitant to endorse this proposal, but stop to consider the profound way that the legalization of abortion has taken away the stigma against a woman who wants to terminate her pregnancy. Abortion was once considered murder and thus could only be obtained secretly and at great risk to women. Now, our country celebrates women who exercise their choice to murder their family members. Why shouldn’t we extend this right, and give women the choice to kill their partners?
