The Destruction of Europe

“Europe becomes more and more a province of Islam, a colony of Islam. And Italy is an outpost of that province, a stronghold of that colony…In each of our cities lies a second city – a Muslim city, a city run by the Quran –  A stage in the Islamic expansionism.”  Oriana Fallaci

Cardinal Robert Sarah, the Vatican’s prefect of the Congregation for Divine worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, long known for his conservative stance on social and moral issues, is warning liberal Catholics that it is “a false exegesis (interpretation of scripture) to use the Word of God to promote migration.  God never wanted these rifts.”

The immigration crisis is harmful to both Europe and the migrants according to Sarah. “All migrants who arrive in Europe are penniless, without work, without dignity.  The church cannot cooperate with this new form of slavery that has become mass migration.”  He warned that if Europe’s policies toward migrants don’t change they will be “invaded by foreigners, just as Rome was invaded by barbarians” and, “if Europe disappears and with it the priceless values of the Old Continent, Islam will invade the world and we will completely change culture, anthropology and moral vision.”  The barbarians, referring to Islamic migrants, “are already inside the city.”   He also warned about the disparity between the birth rates of Europeans and Muslims, which he called “a great risk.”

During the early and middle antiquity, Europe meant the world surrounding the Mediterranean,  which included North Africa.  When Saint Augustine lived in what is today Algeria during the early 5th century AD, North Africa was as much a center of Christianity as Italy or Greece. But the swift advance of Islam across North Africa in the 7th and 8th eighth centuries virtually extinguished Christianity there, thus severing the Mediterranean region into two with the “Middle Sea” a hard border between them rather than a unifying force.

After the breakup of the Roman Empire, the northward migration of the Goth, Vandal, Franks and Lombard forged the rudiments of Western civilization, with the classical legacy of Greece and Rome to be rediscovered only much later. It would take many more centuries for the modern European state system to develop and, along the way, new freedoms allowed the Enlightenment to take hold.

Islam is now helping to undo what it once helped to create. A classical geography is organically reasserting itself, as the forces of terrorism and human migration reunite the Mediterranean Basin, including North Africa and the Levant, with Europe.  Today, hundreds of thousands of Muslims, who have no desire to be Christian or adhere to European culture,  are filtering into economically stagnant European states, threatening to undermine the fragile social peace.

Although much of the European Union political class simply will not admit it, a real inconvenient truth today is that Muslim immigration and Islamic terrorism are showing clear signs of fracturing Europe’s cultural identity. Conservative anti-immigration movements throughout Western Europe today blame not simply Muslim immigration, but Western liberalism itself for what they see as Western Europe’s political and cultural decay. Liberalism, many believe, has given Europe in particular a catastrophic and perhaps in the long term an unsolvable security problem, with jihadism now deeply embedded in Western European society.

Today, much of Continental Europe’s famed public culture of easy-going street life is now done only under armed police protection. Because of militant Islam, many people in Europe are now fearful of doing things that were once considered perfectly safe and normal, such as strolling carefree in their towns and cities, or women walking or travelling alone.

This is not how Muslim immigration was sold.  We were told that Muslim immigration would enrich and enhance the  Western way of life.  We were told they came to Europe because they valued a secular pluralist society.  Be tolerant they said and you will see that we are all one big happy multicultural family.   As is now patently obvious, that’s not how things have worked out, not by a long shot.

It is apparent that Cardinal Sarah’s views and declarations put him at odds not only with his liberal colleagues, but also with the Pope Francis who has been an outspoken advocate for liberal immigration policies, especially in his ongoing feud with Trump over the proposed Wall along our Southern Border with Mexico.  “It is the fear [of migrants] that makes us crazy,” Pope Francis has said. In 2016, he declared that “a person who thinks about building walls … is not Christian.”

That seems like such a strange statement from a man who lives in a city surrounded by walls constructed by Pope Leo IV following the incursion by Muslim raiders in 846 who plundered the outskirts of the city, sacking Old St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s-Outside-the-Walls Basilicas, but were prevented from entering the city itself by the Aurelian Wall.

The Vatican wall helped to protect Pope Gregory VII some 200 years later when the Holy Roman Emperor besieged Rome. Later, after Rome was violently sacked in 1527, Pope Paul III expanded the fortifications, and additional defenses continued to be built until the 1640s.  In more recent history, from 1870 until 1929, the walls served to literally wall off the pope from the outside world, as popes refused to leave the Vatican due to their denial to recognize the country of Italy. Even today, the wall provides a handy barrier that helps the Swiss Guard prevent unauthorized access to the Vatican.

So why is it so “unchristian” for America to want to protect our border? If nothing else comes from the Islamization of Europe, perhaps it will serve as a warning to Americans.

“Political correctness, misplaced sensitivity, but particularly fear, fear that speaking the truth might offend or could cause social unrest, have all combined to create throughout Europe an almost schizophrenic public mentality on anything to do with Islam.  There are two worlds in Europe today when it comes to Islam: one a fabrication of the liberal politicians and media, and one actually inhabited by ordinary people. The people want the truth, they want an honest debate about Islam and immigration, but suspect that the political class and the media are running scared of that debate.” Vincent Cooper
