Most people agree that our world faces major threats, but they wildly disagree on what those threats are. Unfortunately when you can’t identify the real threats, you end up fighting for the wrong causes.
After two recent mass shootings journalists and politicians immediately launched into identifying the underlying threat, as lack of gun control and white nationalism. And naturally Donald Trump is responsible for both.
According to an article in Axios, “tech companies are willing to work more closely with law enforcement to fight white nationalist terrorism, but the industry is skeptical of the White House’s seriousness on the issue. The New York reported that the “El Paso Shooting Suspect’s Manifesto Echoes Trump’s Language,” while the Post blamed Trump’s use of “us against them language on immigration.” Former President Barack Obama identified the underlying threat as “gun laws,” “racist ideologies,” “white supremacy” and “language coming out of the mouths of any of our leaders that feeds a climate of fear and hatred and normalizes racist sentiments ….”
In reality, the 21 year old El Paso murderer is not a conservative or even a Trump supporter. The manifesto that may or may not be from the killer claims that Hispanic immigrants are a threat to the U.S., but not because they are racially inferior – because their numbers will jeopardize free universal health care, universal basic income and the environment. “The next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable.” He sounds more into the United Nations and the Democratic National Party Committee than anything related to Trump and his supporters.
All mass shootings are tragic, and their frequency is increasing. But, from 1989 to 2014, all mass shootings accounted for only 0.13% of the shooting deaths in America. Not 13%, not 1.3%, but 0.13%, most of which are not even remotely linked to the left’s new scam, white nationalism.
To put that into perspective, of the 33,000 yearly gun deaths, a small percentage is related to police shooting suspects or suspects shooting police. Another one-third of those deaths are from black men shooting other black men, while the balance is related to suicide by gun.
Illegal immigration is a real threat. The facts are undeniable: Masses of immigrants are putting themselves and their children in the hands of cartels and attempting illegal, dangerous border crossings. Reports are clear that among those getting across are many criminals and terrorists, not to mention mountains of drugs. And it’s impossible for millions of desperate people pouring into the country not to strain the economies they are entering. It’s impossible for them not to change society and, if Democrats succeed in giving them voting rights, the government.
These are objectively serious threats. But if you bring them up, the left calls you a racist and a white nationalist. If you want to enforce immigration law, then YOU are the threat even though the actual threat posed by the fringe white nationalists is barely a blip on the radar compared to the threat of open borders.
Some on the left are screaming hysterically about racism and the danger of another Holocaust, while insisting that the solution is to eliminate the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and offer these “undocumented asylum seekers” free health care, like that won’t bankrupt the country.
You may have a termite problem affecting, let’s say, less than 1% of your house. But if your house is on fire, you deal with the fire! You don’t turn your back on the flames and begin ripping off drywall to address the termites. Leftists in America, in truth, are trying to solve the termite problem by setting the house on fire.
The El Paso shooter supports free health care and universal basic income. These happen to be two of the “solutions” being promoted by Democratic presidential candidates to solve the crisis of economic inequality. Their other proposals include wealth tax, minimum wage increases, free college, free cash handouts, even slavery reparations. Meanwhile, America’s national debt is $22 trillion and rising fast. This is an existential threat not only to our economy but to our national security. Yet leftists want instead to address the “crisis” of different people having different amounts of wealth—by profoundly exacerbating the debt crisis.
When you view everything through a distorted lens, it is easy to look directly at good and see evil, to hear lies and believe they’re the truth, to see fake threats and think the sky is falling and ignore portents of the world, as we know it, coming to an end.
