The political Overlords are rushing into the abyss to appease the cries of those that seek safety over freedom. In the process, they are destroying the very foundations upon which our nation was founded. Unfortunately, it is not just the avowed ban the guns crowd that have joined hands with the far-left but rather those backstabbing so-called Republicans who campaigned on protecting the Constitution.
In January of this year, Republican Congressman Brian Babin of Texas introduced HR 838, the Threat Assessment, Prevention, and Safety Act (TAPS) which now sets in the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. The bill that has 126 cosponsors, consisting of at least 58 backstabbing Republicans, the last 7 of which signed on in August, has been endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police, the National District Attorneys Association, the Sandy Hook Promise, along with numerous other gun control organizations and mental health associations.
On the very same date, Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who never met an unconstitutional bill he didn’t like, introduced S. 265 with 4 cosponsors, 3 of which are Republicans – Rick Scott of Florida, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas. Both bills would take law enforcement screenings to a whole new level of intrusion by creating a 24 member Joint Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management Task Force under the Department of Homeland Security to “identify individuals who exhibit patterns of concerning behavior.”
The Task Force would consist of one government employee at a GS-15 level or higher and 23 unelected bureaucrats chosen by the politically appointed Secretary to develop “guidelines and best practices” to devise a “national standard of action.” Working with state, local and federal law enforcement to screen men, women and children, the Task force will then single out those they believe might be a future threat. In other words, these bureaucrats would become our judge, jury and executioner.
Without due process of law, these unelected bureaucrats will be able to use anything and everything you write on social media, or say at your workplace, at the local watering hole, or in church, at a neighborhood get together, etc. and also be able to question your minister, your school teachers, your friends and “enemies,” your neighbors, a counselor, work associates, your boss, etc. to determine if you could be the next garlic festival killer, or Ted Bundy or future terrorists. And odds are you won’t know a thing about being on that future threat list until a SWAT team kicks down your door in the middle of the night, shoots your dog and confiscates all your legally purchased guns.
Congress will have no authority over this band of authoritarians. As a matter of fact there is no accountability per se. The Task Force only has to report to Congress once a year on their activities. It’s a rogue government within a government that polices behavior.
Much like the Red Flag laws, the TAPS Act, which has all the earmarks of a paranoid police state that considers everyone to be a potential threat, is but another nail in our coffin.
