The Christian community is told ad nauseam by our moral, intellectual, and political so-called betters that we ought to shun Donald Trump. They tell us we have sold our souls for a bowl of pottage.
Evangelical policy mavens such as Michael Gerson, former Policy Advisor at the Heritage Foundation and op-ed writer for the Washington Post, and Peter Wehner, Sr. Fellow @ Ethics Public Policy Center, a Conservative think tank and op-ed writer for the New York Times are basically recycling the same Trump-bashing column over and over.
National Review’s David French regularly joins in the anti-Trump fray. He’s astonished Christians could support Trump and says that, by our support, we’ve utterly ruined the pro-life and conservative movements for a generation or more. Hogwash!
I couldn’t have been more proud of our president last week when he announced to the world that the United States was officially joining the pro-life resistance. “Americans will never tire of defending innocent life. We are aware that many United Nations projects have attempted to assert a global right to taxpayer-funded abortion on demand, right up until the moment of delivery. Global bureaucrats have absolutely no business attacking the sovereignty of nations that wish to protect innocent life.”
The President’s no-nonsense, straightforward defense of unborn life and national sovereignty came just one day after Alex Azar, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, told a UN High Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage of the UN General Assembly, there is “no international right to abortion.”
Less widely reported, but perhaps even more important, was a letter organized by President Trump that 18 additional governments signed announcing that they will not even accepted coded abortion language such as “sexual and reproductive health” or “reproductive rights” in a new United Nations global document on health because “such terms do not adequately take into account the key role of the family in health and education, nor the sovereign right of nations to implement health policies according to their national context….”
Trump is basically carrying the ball alone facing stiff opposition from elements within our own government, particularly the State Department, that view the murder of unborn children as a sacrament. The much ballyhooed pro-lifer Nikki Haley didn’t do a darn thing for the cause when she was our ambassador to the U.N.
But even worse, pro-lifers had to do battle with some of her staff and others in the State Department. One assertive pro-lifer, who had a top spot at the State Department, was chased out by permanent bureaucrats who ganged up on her. Yet another critical person at USAID was excoriated by the left-wing press for saying, “this is a pro-life administration.” How did the left-wing media learn of this faux pas? It was leaked by this woman’s colleagues, who are after her scalp.
Given the heated reaction to Trump’s anti-abortion language, even within our own government, it’s even more remarkable that Trump has pressed the issue this far. His actions aren’t the actions of a politician who is merely pandering to the religious conservatives – he is a true believer who is defying both the U.S. and U.N. bureaucracies.
The battle will continue. No one seriously thinks that those who support the murder of innocent babies at the U.N., State Department, USAID or the White House are going to pack up and move on. Trump’s speech and the support of pro-lifers will only redouble their efforts.
But, as we saw last week, pro-lifers finally have an ally in the Leader of the Free World.
