We are today living off the interest of Christianity, drawing from the deposit of faith that lifted the West out of paganism. Our civilization, with its insistence on individual rights and due process and enumerated powers and the rule of law, relies above all on a specifically Christian understanding of man and society and the cosmos. That’s what John Adams meant, for example, when he said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Unfortunately for western civilization, that interest is running out. We are no longer a moral and religious people, and there is a real danger that without Christianity our civilization, along with our system of government, will atrophy and die. That is not to say we will revert to pre-Christian paganism, but we are beginning to lose those ideas and principles that made our civilization distinct from the rest of the world.
The world our children and grandchildren will face is very different from the world of our own childhood. We now live in a highly sexualized culture of greed, selfishness, and self-indulgence. And the pressure to conform is great. But as Billy Graham once warned, we must not allow the world’s sewage system to contaminate our minds, nor should we conform to the world physically or socially. Our bodies are meant to be the temple of the Spirit of God that abides in us. The world attempts to absorb us into its secular society and to conform us to its earthly image, but Christ tells us not to conform: “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:16).
Unless we actively swim against the tide of this worldly culture, we will find ourselves drifting in the wrong direction, carried away by the current.
Religious freedom is a nation’s strongest guarantee against tyranny which explains why it is also the first target that tyrants attack. The more they succeed in destroying Christianity and the freedoms guaranteed thereto by the First Amendment, the more they succeed in ending freedom, period.
The left hates Christians because when we fight against the destruction of our faith, we are in essence preventing them from living up to the dictates of their false religion. Our rebelliousness has denied them the state of grace they seek to exorcise their implied divine right to dictate every aspect of our puny lives. This sick faith gives meaning to these secular weirdoes, giving them something to fill their empty lives with a messianic fervor to go out and convert the heathen, and the “heathen” is us, according to Kurt Schlichter at Townhall.
And yet, Dr. Michael Brown believes there is hope for society. He writes that “it is a biblical principle that everything reproduces after its own kind. Generosity begets generosity, kindness begets kindness, hatred begets hatred, and cruelty begets cruelty. When this principle is applied to the cultural elitism of the left it is inevitable that, over time, the left will eventually devour itself. That’s because cultural elitism is based on a self-righteous judgmentalism which, in turn, begets even more self-righteous judgmentalism. And so, by its very nature, the circle gets smaller and smaller until the ally of today becomes the enemy of tomorrow. The silver lining in all this is that, over time, the radical left will cancel itself. Just give it enough time.”
Let’s just hope we can maintain our heritage and our nation survives long enough for the left to destroy themselves.
