Woke Medicine

Wokism has reared its ugly head once again at the AMA. They are now offering a course called Racism in Medicine, a course that is nothing, but racist propaganda engaged in unfathomable scientific misrepresentations.

Consider the course introduction:  “…We acknowledge that we are all living off of the stolen ancestral lands of indigenous peoples for thousands of years; we acknowledge the extraction of brilliance, energy, and life for labor forced upon people of African descent for more than 400 years; we celebrate the resilience and strength that all indigenous people and descendants of Africa have shown in this country and worldwide. We carry our ancestors in us, and we are continually called to be better as we lead in this work.”

If that doesn’t convince you that the course is filled with trivial woke ideology, they recommended the “nested subset” approach to defining race as being a “more modern and scientifically accurate understanding of genetic diversity,” or in other words, doctors are now to believe that there is “no genetic or biological basis for race because we know that to be a “political and social construction.”

Unfortunately, medical wokism doesn’t end with race, or gender.

Harvard Medical School Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee recently voted to embed climate change into their school’s curriculum to examine the impact of climate change on health and health inequality, its impact on clinical care and the role of doctors and hospitals in finding solutions to health care’s impact on the environment.

So, what role can the medical community, which accounts for around 8.5% of America’s greenhouse gas emissions, play in these woke, climate change reduction efforts?

One way is to reduce the amount of anesthesia given to surgical patients.  Dr. Mohamed Fayed claims that delivering just one hour of surgical anesthesia is the equivalent of driving a car 470 miles in terms of greenhouse gas.  Sure, the patient may suffer pain during surgery but the woke medical field will no longer have to worry about the polar ice caps melting and flooding their yards.  Dr. Fayed even suggested that patients would have to learn to suffer through the pain.

Henry Ford Health in Detroit is already making changes to save the planet by axing the drug desflurane, a general anesthetic used in the operating room, because it produces the most significant carbon dioxide emissions.  Desflurane is also used as a maintenance anesthesia in adults and children after receiving other anesthetics before and during surgery.

The Department of Anesthesiology at Michigan Medicine recently launched the Green Anesthesia Initiative or GAIA for short to reduce the types and rates of anesthesia they use during surgery. And in order to draw more hospitals into the woke fold, they are leading a national initiative to try to reduce anesthetic gas flow rates in health care centers across the country.

Woke doesn’t just include letting patients suffer during surgery for lack of anesthesia.  Minimally invasive surgeries that include robotic assisted operations for cancers ranging from colorectal and uterine cancer to head and neck cancer have to go. A robotic assisted hysterectomy, for example, produces as much carbon as driving more than 2,200 miles in a car, the equivalent of a road trip from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Los Angeles.

It has also been suggested that hospitals could reduce waste associated with packaging of surgical and medical equipment by switching to reusable or “reprocessed” devices and surgical gowns since, according to the woke environmental crowd, there is NO “link between reused tools and hospital acquired infections.”  Doctors can also permanently switch to Telemedicine as opposed to real life office visits to make their practice greener and more environmentally friendly.

Would you feel confident receiving care at a hospital that is more concerned with the climate than your pain level?  Would you really trust your life to doctors and nurses who subscribe to this woke nonsense?
