The Democratic Party has a God problem according to Salena Zito in a 2017 article at the New York Post. Remembering the 2012 Democratic Convention draft platform, Zito argued that the Democrats have continued to “push away religious voters by actively repelling them with accusations of bigotry and backwardness.”
For those that don’t remember the 2012 convention, Democratic leaders made a conscious decision to remove all references to God in their platform which did not bode well with ordinary voters outside the orbit of the Democratic Party apparatchiks. So the leaders offered an amendment on the convention’s agenda which turned out to be just as controversial with delegates who also opposed the mention of God. When Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, asked for three separate voice votes on the amendment to restore the mention of God, he was booed during the hearing. In essence, they were booing God!
Since the 2012 convention the problem has only grown with the Party’s increasing reliance on the divisiveness of social and cultural issues like abortion, gay marriage, pedophilia, white supremacy, gender diversity, gun confiscation, etc.
Brad Chism, a longtime Democratic strategist based in Mississippi, adds that the divide between the party and everyday America has zapped the Party’s ability to communicate to religious American even though some of the greatest moral advancements in our country’s history have been accomplished largely through the influence of the church, especially during the 20th century. “You look at women’s suffrage, civil rights, the abolition of slavery and all of these massive changes where religion and religious people played a role in moving society toward a higher plane.”
This great divide is even more apparent in that the DNC recently passed a resolution acknowledging and embracing the “religiously unaffiliated” of society, noting that they have “overwhelmingly share the Democratic Party’s values with 70% voting for Democrats in 2018, 80% supporting same-sex marriage and 61% believing that illegal aliens make American society stronger.” Without specifically mentioning Christians but seemingly alluding to them, the resolution also criticizes those who use religious liberty to “threaten the civil rights” of homosexuals, religious minorities and unbelievers.
The resolution also states that “those most loudly claiming that morals, values, and patriotism must be defined by their particular religious views have used those religious views, with misplaced claims of ‘religious liberty,’ to justify public policy that has threatened the civil rights and liberties of many Americans, including but not limited to the LGBT community, women, and ethnic and religious/nonreligious minorities.”
If you hate Christianity, morals and values – we’re the party for you! If you believe men and women can morph into different sexes, we’re the party for you! If you believe that terrorists belong to a religion of peace, we’re the party for you! If you believe in Communism, Socialism and Tyranny, we’re the party for you! In other words, if common sense is not your forte, welcome to the fold!
Perhaps it was a good strategy for the Democrats to make such an explicit appeal to this substantial voting bloc. It certainly seems that the values of the religiously non-affiliated are much closer to those of the DNC and the ruling elite than they are to everyday Americans.
Of course, not everyone on the Democrat side thinks that the DNC’s resolution was wise. According to Michael Wear, who previously served as a faith adviser to President Obama, the DNC’s resolution is “stupid on a fundamental level that transcends electoral politics.”
“America’s future lies in the traditional values of hard work and self-reliance in a free market – and in the nuclear family with mothers and fathers raising kids and teaching them how to be productive members of society. America had better wake up. Conservatives are not perfect. But unlike Democrats, they are not taking us down a path of total destruction. That’s what Democrats are doing. And that’s what makes them evil.” Linda Woolley
