Though Palestinian leaders are sworn enemies of Israel they still have any supporters among the far left in the US and EU who sympathize with their perceived underdog image, an image carefully constructed by the terrorists controlling the area. Would ultra-leftists support a group whose overwhelming majority holds hateful attitudes about black Americans, or Muslims or does hatred of the nation of Israel get a pass?
Since the early 1900s, Palestinian Arabs have mounted numerous attacks against Jews. Arabs rejected the U.N. Partition Plan for Palestine in 1947, that called for sharing the Holy Land with the Jews. While the Jewish Agency for Palestine accepted the Plan, both Arab governments and local Palestinian Arab leaders spurned it.
Despite wars against Israel by Arab armies in 1967 and 1973, the Jewish state has made numerous offers of land for peace with the Palestinians and in 2008 under U.S. auspice, Israel offered the Palestinians most of Judea and Samaria, aka the West Bank, and a capital in Jerusalem. But even then, hatred of the people of Israel caused the Palestinian Arabs to refuse to recognize Israel.
The Palestinian government has been the recipient of foreign aid since 1994, some of the largest per capita support of any group globally and yet the economies in both Gaza and the West Bank are in shambles, effectively bankrupt due largely to corruption and the costs associated with continuous fighting against Israel.
Both major political groups – Hamas in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, have been ruled by dictatorships since 2005. The Hamas charter calls for the total destruction of Israel and the murder of all Jews living there. The Palestinian Authority has stated numerous times that “in a final resolution, we would not see the presence of a single Israeli, civilian or soldier, on our lands.”
Hamas is not fighting for a Palestinian State that shares borders with Israel. Hamas’s goal is the total annihilation of the Jewish people and the Nation of Israel.
Neither group observes democratic rule of law – no civil liberties are guaranteed – no freedom of speech or freedom of assembly. Women are second-class citizens and homosexuals are persecuted, especially in Hamas ruled Gaza where Sharia law is observed.
Despite unrelenting rejection of peace, despite egregious injustices in Hamas controlled territory, despite the regressive values of many in the region, the left continues to side with terrorists.
In truth, the Palestinians have no legal status to the lands they claim since it comprises the core of the indigenous Jewish people’s ancestral homeland. The Balfour Declaration of 1917, the San Remo Resolution of 1920 and the League of Nations’ Mandate for Palestine, which lasted from 1922 to 1948, called for the entire Land of Israel, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, to become a “national home for the Jewish people.” The Palestine Mandate even recognized the “historical connection of the Jewish people to the land for reconstituting their national home in that country.”
Judea and Samaria form the core of the Land of Israel. It is where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Leah and Rachel gave birth to the Israeli nation. It is where Christ was born and taught. The land is home to many of the Jewish and Christian people’s historic and sacred sites, including Jerusalem, the ancient capital and home to the First and Second Temples. They also include Hebron, home to the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs and Shomron, the capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel.
Israel was not created in order to disappear—Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom. President John F. Kennedy
