First-Amendment guarantees of free speech are a cherished part of the American tradition and set us apart from virtually every other country. But should there be limits to free speech?
Hate speech is a communication, whether oral or written, with the sole purpose to degrade, oppress, or marginalize those at whom it is directed or to breed an ‘us vs. them’ mentality. Stating a fact in truth, regardless of whether or not that fact may hurt someone’s feelings, is not hate speech – rude, yes but not hate speech.
Hate speech can and does emanate from all races, all political parties but the most vocal are the political left who openly complain about the lack of “civility” and the proliferation of “hate speech” in America, while discounting hate speech of their own.
