Orwellian connotes an attitude and a brutal policy of draconian control by propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, denial of truth, and manipulation of the past. Orwell observed that words and language can and does corrupt though as he wrote of the sinister power of “doublespeak” and “doublethink.”
In order to control millions, totalitarian or proto-totalitarian governments find it necessary to somehow prod their subjects into accepting that which is not true. Intelligent people will naturally see the truth so they must be conditioned to reject self-evident truth, to reject the sanity of common sense, to accept the insanity of ‘doublespeak’ and ‘doublethink’, to accept the lie and the truth in their minds simultaneously, “with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.”
Doublespeak lies tend to confuse or escape the notice of unsuspecting people. For example, government which confiscates middle class property through excessive taxation while lining their own pockets and redistributing the stolen property to a lazy so-called proletariat class, in return for votes, is government deemed to be a “provider” of “equity” and “social justice.” Never mind that forced equal property outcome destroys the work ethic of both classes, leading to economic collapse, and never mind that forced equal property outcome is a big Orwellian lie. Like the pigs of Animal Farm, the self-serving government class empowered to take the people’s property always ends up the with lion’s share , the worst form of inequality and social injustice. Greed and theft by the government can never be publically identified therefore, the Orwellian doublespeak, “social Justice.”
Another Orwellian lie is the “Living Constitution,” doublespeak for Dead Constitution. The Living Constitution is law not derived from ‘We the People,’ but law arbitrarily derived from a small judicial or administrative minority. The so-called Living Constitution does not take its breath of life from the people’s amendment process but from the minds of the elitist class of Philosopher Kings. Constitutional law derived exclusively from a small governing minority means the Constitution is living for them – but dead for the rest of us, the opposite of what our Founding Fathers intended.
Such is the currency of Obama’s reign. All sail, no rudder, but his bluster is power. He couples grand, sweeping oratory with a bold resolve, brooking no opposing opinion – fond of pronouncements such as “let me be clear,” or “the verdict is clear,” or “this is not fiction, it is science,” and although his relentless barrage of lies, half-truths and rhetoric is anything but clear, a significant part of the American populace seems to find comfort as they cling to his convoluted assurances.
He offers us a world where doublespeak government lies are cleverly disguised in rhetoric, lies which can be received and accepted by otherwise intelligent people. Terrorists are mere armed insurgents, illegal aliens are undocumented citizens, heath insurance has nothing to do with health care, transparency doesn’t mean open government, checks and balances is no longer coequal branches of government, capitalism isn’t free enterprise, freedom of religion has morphed into freedom from religion, progressive taxation is understood to be a fair tax, and a women’s rights to choose means the death of her child. American justice is now only for some of the people, for we are learning that some are more equal than others. A government of, by, and for the people has become a government for enough of the people, enough of the time, for the purpose of getting past the next election.
In fairness to tyrants in general and to Obama in particular, perhaps history will record how a complacent American people simply deserved to be enslaved. It all makes sense if you say if fast enough and repeat it long enough!
