The Left Goes After Religious Liberty

“The freedom to worship is one of our nation’s most fundamental rights.  That First Amendment guarantee should never be used to undermine other Americans’ civil rights or subject them to discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity.” Kamala Harris

While her sentiment plays lip service to the First Amendment what Harris actually conveys is that millennia-old religious convictions should never be allowed to get in the way of the progressive agenda.

It is apparent that Kamala Harris, you know the self-righteous feminist Democratic candidate who Willie Brown, the Mayor of San Francisco, admitted slept her way to the top, is not fond of liberty – at least our liberty.

A few days ago, she called for “banning right to work laws” in order to remove “barriers to organized labor being able to organize and strike.”  In other words, Harris would prefer that we bow down and kiss the ring of labor bosses in order to work and support our families.

And it’s not just people being able to work without bowing down to left-wing unions that gets her goat, she absolutely despises Christians in general, along with any person who is pro-life, believes in traditional marriage, and that includes even atheists.  In her mind they are unfit to work in the public sector, in any capacity.

She has now joined forces with other anti-religious Democrats to pass the Do No Harm Act, originally introduced in 2017, in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Hobby Lobby v. Burwell that exempted religious employers from the ObamaCare contraception mandate.

Reintroduced by Harris in February with Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts and Bobby Scott of Illinois, the Do No Harm Act would put the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and those protected by it directly into the crosshairs of progressives.

A press release from Kennedy’s office, brags that the bill “would clarify that no one can seek religious exemption from laws guaranteeing fundamental civil and legal rights” by limiting the use of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in cases involving discrimination, child labor and abuse, wages and collective bargaining, access to health care, public accommodations and social services provided through government contract.”  This would be accomplished by exempting government laws and regulations from the RFRA standard.

Thomas Jipping, a legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, reminds us that “government could and almost certainly would completely ignore any impact” their laws and regulations will “have on religious freedom.” If passed, the Do No Harm bill would put Hobby Lobby and the Little Sisters of the Poor under the Democrat’s crosshairs, along with any other employer whose faith prohibits them for paying for abortion, or sterilization, or contraception under the guise of medical insurance.l

In addition, federal contractors with religious beliefs that run against the left’s orthodoxy on sex, marriage, abortion, or contraception would also be in trouble, according to the text of the bill, and it would also overturn a recent waiver from the Trump administration that allows faith-based adoption organizations to facilitate adoptions in line with their views on marriage.

Do No Harm would also limit which laws RFRA applies to. For instance, it would no longer allow believers to be exempt from the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Violence Against Women Act, or laws that require coverage for any health care item.

By removing one of the strongest safeguards people of faith have against federal encroachments on their free exercise rights, the bill would leave American believers open to any number of future violations, so long as those violations are framed in terms of a class or cause somehow hurt by their religious beliefs. Anything associated with God would be tainted.

Religious free exercise is not limited to speech alone, and it’s not geographically confined to the four walls of a church, synagogue, mosque or meeting house. It’s the freedom to live out one’s beliefs in daily life, including how one conducts business, even when those beliefs come into conflict with the Left’s ever-evolving dogmas.

Perhaps it should not come as any great surprise that Harris and the majority of her Party members have distanced themselves from the notion that, as President John Adams pointed out, “righteousness exalteth a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.”

This is what happens when “live-your-truth” is the prevailing moral position.  No one should be surprised that politicians who support the “right” to murder children in the womb, who championed the legal redefinition of marriage, and who now pretend we can no longer rely on science, or common sense, or even simply our eyes to tell us who is a male and who is a female, would display open animus against people whose faith tells them such positions are immoral, and who live according to the notion that there is such a thing as absolute truth.

The left’s decent into evil knows no bounds.
