FRC’s Lt. General Jerry Boykin flew down to join our Church Ministries team on the road in Charlotte, North Carolina yesterday, calling on pastors to be bold and courageous — something he knows a little about. General Boykin shared powerful testimonies of battlefield courage from his 36 years in the Army and called for greater moral courage in our culture today. Other speakers took their cue from the general. Bishop Larry Jackson urged the pastors to be bold in their prayers for their community, recounting the dramatic turn-around in Fayetteville due to pastors and churches praying. Dr. Mark Harris passionately urged pastors to serve as courageous Watchmen over their churches and communities, sounding the alarm from the pulpit to warn and rally the people.
Our own Dr. Kenyn Cureton spoke on the power of partnership, recounting stories of pastors who courageously banded together to roll back the darkness and advance the cause of righteousness in their communities. Pastor J.C. Church and Dr. Rick Scarborough used the biblical examples of the three Hebrews defying King Nebuchadnezzar and being thrown in the fiery furnace and David standing up to a lion, a bear and a giant as inspiring calls to greater courage.
In addition to all the powerful biblical exhortation to be courageous in the culture, there was plenty of practical application. Dr. Cureton encouraged pastors to set up a Culture Impact ministry in their churches to help inform, equip, and mobilize their members, offering our manual and help from John Mendez, our National CIT Coordinator. John Rustin of the North Carolina Family Policy Council gave the pastors a number of action steps with regard to state policy and legislation. Tami Fitzgerald of North Carolina Values explained the crisis in public schools regarding radical and explicit sex education and encouraged pastors to participate in the “Sex Ed Sit Out” on April 23. Randy Wilson closed the event with another charge to stand and be courageous.
